Catfish Bait Recipes

There are two basic bait recipes you can make to attract catfish. Each of them requires incompatible ingredients, and you’re going to verify this.

For the first stink bait recipe, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Wood chips
  • 1lbb of nacho cheese (choose the cheapest one, as it works great for fish, and they don’t care about the price)
  • Ice cream stick
  • Old empty jar (any jar would be perfect)
  • Sponge
  • 8 ounces of beef blood (or any other blood)
  • 1 glass of minced garlic (or garlic powder)

First of all, cheese needs to wait in the sun for a few minutes. It will work best if you don’t hurry with that—Flathead catfish like when it’s stinky. However, anglers aren’t thrilled about it (same for cats).

Now, move to the most interesting and most disgusting part of the process: put all the listed ingredients into one jar, combine them, add water and a few wood chips to make the recipe texture a bit thicker. Don’t hurry up as you can miss some imperfections such as big chunks or clumps. It’s essential to avoid them if you want your recipe to work in the way you want it to. Bear in mind the perfect texture should remind you of oatmeal.

When the perfect bait texture is ready, close the jar lid tightly and put the jar in the sun. After that, all you can do is wait. Minimum, one week in the sun is perfect for this bait, but if you have time to wait longer, the better result will be waiting for you (as a reward for your patience) when on the bank fishing. You know, some people wait for three and more months till they get the perfect bait. And, not surprisingly, catfish go crazy about it.

For another dip bait, you need to collect the following bait ingredients:

  • 1/4 c. Flour
  • 1 egg
  • 2-3 T. Garlic Salt
  • 1 1/2 c. Livers (Deer, Cow, or Chicken liver)
  • 2 tsp Strawberry Jello
  • 1 Sardine & 2 T. Sardine Oil

Firstly, you need to place the liver in the food processor and blend it into the liquid condition. After that, take other ingredients from the list, mix them, and put this stink bait into a clean plastic peanut butter jar.  Close the jar lid and cover it, so it will remain in the dark.

The main rule you need to bear in mind every time you make stink baits is to keep the window closed and create a supportive environment for baits. It’s essential to wait at least 48 hours before opening the jar lid. Otherwise, there won’t be a proper effect, and you won’t get a punch bait. And punch baits are the ones that smell awful. But it isn’t very good for you and a beautiful scent for the fish.

Summary

Don’t underestimate the importance of the information you’ve received just now. Yes, making catfish baits might not sound solid (especially when you can purchase everything in online and offline stores), but it’s a practical skill we believe every survivalist and angler need to have.

You never know what can happen the other day and what skills will become vital. Sometimes (actually, quite often), having treble hooks isn’t enough. Who needs them if you don’t have the right bait to attract fish you want to possess?  Catfish may ignore your treble hook if they don’t smell the stinks, and it turned out this is their favorite scent.

The stronger stink, the better for you: this is something you need to draw your attention to. Don’t try to understand this (as you won’t). Just do it, and let the final result surprise you.

Do catfish like peanut butter?

They do love it, and that’s the reason why fisherman always put their baits in the cashew butter jars. The sweet aroma and flavor mixed with shrimp or sardines create the perfect combination attracting catfish the most. Giving catfish your peanut butter sandwiches might also be the solution if you forgot to take lure with you.

Does catfish make good bait?

Indeed, catfish can be the perfect bait for such aquatic creatures as cobia or tarpon. Put catfish on the end of the hook to catch the big fish and surprise your loved ones. You can make bait, catch catfish, and then catch bigger fish using that catfish as bait. Profit!

How to make your own catfish dough bait?

If you have 1 cup of flour, 1 tin of sardines, 1 cup of cornmeal, and a 1-ounce bottle of anise extract, you can try to make catfish dough bait. Mix all the components in one mixing bowl, make tiny pieces out of the sardines. Stir in anise extract and some water to make the bait texture more suitable for luring catfish. Create pieces of the ready dough and place them in hot water. After a few minutes, the bait will be ready.

How to dry chicken livers for catfishing?

It’s uncomfortable to use the fresh chicken livers as bait, which is why people prefer to dry ones before angling. For this, you need to find an appropriate empty box, put livers in there, add a bit of garlic or salt, shake the box, and mix its contents. After that, put the liver in the sun for at least four hours, flipping them over from time to time. After completing this procedure, you’ll get the perfect dry chicken liver you can put on your hook and lure some catfish.
