Since you never know when and where disaster finds you, our recommendation is to always have a mask respirator at hand. Buy yourself a few of these items with a set of spare filters.

Have one in your car, one at your house, and one at your work. Be sure you also have one in your get-home bag and your bug-out bag. This will not only give you the feeling of safety but will highly increase your survival chances in the case of an emergency, be it a tear gas attack or even a nuclear, biological hazard.

We hope that this information was helpful and wish you to avoid such emergency situations when it will be necessary to use a gas mask and recall our pieces of advice. Below you can find answers to the most frequent questions on the topic of respiratory gas masks.

How to Avoid Choosing a Bad Gas Mask?

Unfortunately, many people who have to deal with tear gas, pepper spray, and other toxic particles are not enthusiastic about spending lots of money on a good mask. It leads to worsening of their health conditions after being subjected to the gases or fumes. So, you should be ready to spend some hundreds on a good quality mask that you can reuse many times in the future. Consider getting ghillie suit as well.

Some masks also do not provide enough filtering or ventilation so it gets hard to breathe while being in the mask. Before buying the mask offline, you’d better try it on to see if you can see and move in a comfortable way while putting it on.

The speed of getting into the mask is also important. Make sure you can wear the mask in just a few seconds if you are in an emergency situation.

Why You Need a Gas Mask

Why You Need A Gas Mask Let’s start with the idea that a respiratory gas mask system is an ultimate survival tool. This sort of items is designed to save lives in different environments. While many people will usually say that a water filter is a basic lifesaver, we cannot forget that breathing is what really keeps us going on. Without water, you will hopefully last for 3 to 5 days. But without oxygen, you will be gone in just a few minutes. So breathing is life. And to breathe healthily, we need clean air.

We all tend to take clean and breathable air for granted. But the reality is that it’s not. The air we breathe every single moment of our lives will not just vanish. But the trick is that breathable air does not necessarily mean it cannot be poisonous.

When we say that the air is toxic or chemically infused, it does not mean that it’s impossible to breathe. Depending on the number of dangerous particles in the air, it becomes just a question of time: how long you can keep breathing before the poison you inhale kills you. This question gets even more challenging when you realize that you must breathe to survive, but at the same time, every breath you take pushes you closer to the grave.

Not the best situation to find yourself in without a respirator. That’s when a high-quality NBC gas mask system comes into play. Because that’s what a gas mask does: it filters the air so you can breathe safely even in the harshest of conditions.

Ever wondered why law-enforcement teams, the military, firefighters, and rescue units all have gas masks as items of their uniforms? Those people are trained to perform their professional duties in the worst circumstances. And to do so, they must be appropriately equipped with the latest safety technologies to keep going even if the air is a deadly threat.

But even if you’re just a regular person, you still might consider the idea of getting yourself a reliable full-face respirator. If a nuclear attack happens, this full-face respirator will ensure your survival. Continue reading the article and find out more about the best filters, respiratory systems, and other items that will save you from dangerous chemicals and toxic particles in the atmosphere, unseen by the naked eye.

What Is a Gas Mask System, Anyway?

How Do Gas Mask Filters Work? A gas mask system is an item of PPE. Technically speaking, it is personal air-filtering survival gear. It is small and portable, designed to be easily carried and kept. Its task is simple – to let a user breathe clean, i.e., filtered from toxic elements. The range of use varies from everyday tasks to CBRN defense situations.

Mira Safety Cm-7M Gas Mask The concept is quite similar to water filters that we use to clean water to ensure that it’s suitable for drinking. The fundamental difference from water filters is that you can last without clean water for three days max, while air is needed every moment.

It is an interesting fact that such modern systems aiming at our breathing protection date back to ancient times, and their history counts hundreds of years. The next paragraph will read about the origin and the story of such a device essential for life as the gas mask.

A Background Story

A Background Story The history of gas respirators is more extended than many people might guess. The first known design of a gas mask goes back to Ancient Greece. Back then, mask respirators were only primitive variants of what we use now. Greeks used sponges for mask air filtering, and their masks bore similarities to modern surgical or medical masks.

From then on, various inventors tried to configure new types of face respirators. To name a couple, they were Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and the respirator he invented in 1785; miners used Alexander von Humboldt’s masks at the turn of the 19th century. But the first gas mask that resembled the modern type of mask belonged to Lewis Haslett, an American inventor. He designed his version of the respirator in 1847.

But the history of the gas mask was far from over. Because all those early endeavors were not perfect and did not ensure guaranteed survival. Until 1916 when a British chemist Edward Harrison constructed something that became the first practical mask ever. This invention of the grim WWI era was inspired by the first use of a chemical weapon in human history and demonstrated that a gas mask and respirator possessed real survival potential.

As time passed, technologies developed, and gas masks became more reliable, meeting extensive use. A gas mask may seem creepy. Its goggles, air hoses, and filter canisters may evoke images of a post-apocalyptic future, nuclear, biological disasters, death, and devastation. Still, the truth is, despite their sinister looks, this item of survival gear can save lives in survival situations if you have it in your bug-out bag. Read about the system behind the work of a respirator or mask, the filters in use, and more in the next chapter.

Types of Gas Masks

Types Of Gas Masks Even though the gas invasion may appear on different occasions, the gained harm may be of various extent. So, in different situations, it is better to choose very particular types of masks:

Most masks of this type are intended to protect the wearer from the physical invasion of dust and dirt and to filter the air from the dirt particles. They also do not let the things from the wearer’s mouth go into the surrounding area. The widespread example of such type is surgical masks that protect the doctor from the blood that may sprinkle from the patient’s body, and provide protection for the patient too. That is why this mask is very popular during pandemics since it gives protection to its user and to the people around them.

However, wearing this mask will not help you during military protests. Most likely your nasal mucosa will be burning and it will be hard to breathe since this mask is not reliable in giving such strong protection.

  • Half-Face Respirators

This category includes respirators and escape hoods that are designed to give better protection from the gasses. You may expect them to protect your nose, mouse, and the whole lower part of the face. The escape hoods are usually used during a fire outbreak escape. The wearers have not been exposed to the suffocating gas thanks to the changeable filter cartridges that can be changed during the gas invasion without inhaling toxic smoke.

In fact, those masks and respirators are perfect for providing protection from carbon monoxide (the gas that occurs during the fire) and all other dangers of fire, building collapse. Nevertheless, the more serious exposures will still harm you if you are wearing this kind of mask. Even though the protection provided by respirators

  • Full-Face Respirators

Distinguishing this category is already a simplification of the full range of full-face masks since they include many different kinds of filter masks. As it can be understood from the name, these masks cover the full face, especially including nose, mouth, and eyes, and thus totally protect the skin, lungs, and airways of the wearer.

The masks from this type usually include Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) ones, which obviously mean the purposes of the mask. Even a full-face respirator can give you some degree of protection and decrease the risk of getting a disease after a gas explosion.

These also include the most significant and even used by police, military services, and emergency personnel filter masks that are called SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) and PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirator). Thanks to this gear, it is possible to live through a chemical attack, especially if the respirator is equipped with changeable filter cartridges that provide extra oxygen supply.

A full-face respirator and tear gas mask can also be divided into two categories: civilian and military. As it can be understood from the name, they are applied for different purposes, prior–for the workplace or at-home wearing, while the military mask filters severe and heavy fumes which can cause death.

  • Goggles

Since goggles are designed mostly to protect the eyes, their function decreases rapidly. However, in many situations, wearing goggles is better than wearing nothing at all and being exposed to a pepper spray burn. Moreover, there exist goggles that cover the nose and nostrils, yet it is still not very reliable for protecting the lungs of protesters.

Further, we will discuss how to know when you must wear a gas mask, what is Mira safety and why you may consider acquiring it, and how to choose the best gas mask for any case.

How to Know I Am Affected by Toxic Gas or Fume?

How To Know I Am Affected By Toxic Gas Or Fume? Except for tear gas from crowd control or pepper spray from a street offender, you may be affected by other types of gas and even the most sensitive nose may not feel its presence. Nevertheless, the majority of gases that you can meet in daily life are those used against protesters by police during crowd control operations.

CS gas is the most frequently used type of tear gas. Several years ago, one of the most widespread riot control agents was CN gas but it came out that its usage against protesters caused heavy diseases and increased risk of death occurrences within them. That is why now CN is used rarely and replaced by CS gas, pepper spray, and water cannons. Nevertheless, having with you and putting on a gas mask is essential when going to a protest.

What can overtake you at home or workplace is so-called town gas. A notion about gas leaks should be a sign that you should use a respirator, mask, or a wet handkerchief while being in a building. Otherwise, if you breathe in this gas, you are subjected to intoxication or even coma.

That is why it is extremely important to know how to prevent yourself from passing out and being intoxicated from a toxic gas or fume. First of all, pay attention to the scents. The town gas has a typical smell so it can be recognized. So, if you know there is a danger of gas leak occurrence and feel a specific smell, be ready to leave the building. Try not to make lots of breaths and use a respirator or wet piece of textile, turn off electrical appliances, and call an emergency service. These actions may prevent a gas explosion and save you from intoxication.

Another possible issue is fire occurrence inside the building. If there is a fire alarm or a visible source of fire or smoke, wear a mask, respirator, or use a wet textile to cover your nose and mouth. Your main purpose is not only to avoid open fire but also not to be choked by carbon monoxide. If you have to leave the building through long-distance spaces, move by squatting to be nearer to the floor.

Tear gas is probably the most uncomfortable gas that can be used towards protesters and any other person. The first feeling you get is burning in your eyes and nose. Next, you are not able to inhale since the gas’ particles settle down in your throat and make it impossible to use the muscles in a common way. That is why police are very unlikely to use tear gas against protesters during a small and minor protest. However, if the government is concerned about one, it will ask the enforcement agencies to use exactly tear gas.

If you are subjected to tear gas during a protest, there is no better way than to get out of the crowd and wear a mask or respirator that filters the tear gas (it will be a wise decision to wear it even before the gas spraying). To know which masks are applicable, stay with us to know more details about choosing the best gear.

How Do Gas Mask Filters Work?

How Do Gas Mask Filters Work?

Today such masks operate thanks to special air purifying filters. There are three main types of filtration that are as follows: particle filtration, chemical absorption, and the chemical reaction that implies other chemicals neutralization. All these types require a more detailed description. Let us enlarge each of them.

Particle filtration represents the most widespread and straightforward type of air purification and dates back to Ancient Greece when people used special sponges applied to their faces to ensure safety. Particle filters prevent hazardous substances from getting into your lungs.

It’s just as simple as covering your face with a piece of clothing, trying to escape the disgusting smell. However, modern-type particle filtration face masks are a bit more elaborate: their filters are more reliable.

Such respirators provide protection from biological threats playing the role of a virus filter. But this sort of respiratory protection has its limits. Filters clog quickly, so they require regular replacement. In general, once every 24 hours of use. If we face another problem, such as air poisoning by some chemical substance posing a deadly threat, we need another kind of air filtration that implies a different mechanism of protection.

The more serious Chemical hazards require a different type of protection – chemical absorption. What it does is purifies the air of various chemical agents that easily pass through a particle filter. Activated charcoal is used, for that matter.

A highly porous kind of carbon, charcoal can attract substances like liquids and gasses and absorb potentially hazardous vapors. Unfortunately, this respirator cannot stop everything. Activated charcoal filters will catch some poisonous vapors and miss others, not any less dangerous. So the protection with this respirator is not perfect. So, in this case, we need some other types of filters that will provide much more significant protection from chemical substances. Fortunately, it exists.

The third filter type provides effective protection against a specific chemical agent or another. The mechanism of its effect implies a certain chemical reaction to a certain chemical substance. It is very reliable, and yet it is essential to know the type of chemical agent you have to be protected from to prepare an appropriate counteractive chemical for your mask or a respirator beforehand.

Let’s go back to the days of WWI. For instance, to protect themselves from chlorine gas during chemical attacks, soldiers used masks with sodium thiosulfate to neutralize chlorine.

Gas Mask System Specification

Gas Mask System Specification

Depending on the gas or acid it protects from, each chemical reaction filter is marked with a particular color. This makes the search easier for a customer.

But since these filters are too specific, they can not suit everyday needs. Because you will never know what kind of chemical hazard will be unleashed upon you, there is almost no way to be fully prepared and have the right gas mask filter for the moment.

Mira Safety Cm-7M Gas Mask

Another thing is that a customer should always remember that the filters require regular money investments because you can not use them forever. Usually, their operation period amounts to not more than 24 hours of use. After that, the filter is likely to be replaced, which might cost you about $80. Moreover, you will have to keep at least several of them for each mask or respirator you own.

And finally, the storage life of the filters is limited, and you should observe their expiration date and replace them after it, even in the case they have never been used.

The good news is that, as a rule, the usable shelf life of filters is comparatively long. There are filters that store for more than 20 years.

Now, when you have already found numerous pieces of information concerning the origin and the general mechanisms of gas masks operation, it is time to learn more about how to search for the best respirator or protective mask for you so that it fits your needs the most.

Tear Gas and Pepper Spray: What Is the Difference?

Even though both tear gas and pepper spray are considered to be riot control agents, the active substance and usage purposes differ:

In the whole world, it is a common practice to use pepper spray as a self-defense weapon. It works as a narrow jet directed strictly in one direction, thus headed towards one or two persons. The main consequence of being subjected to pepper spray are skin burn, temporary tearing, and difficulty breathing. These symptoms create a brief inability for people to act, so destructive protesters or offenders can be stopped for some time.

Tear gas is a more severe riot agent. It is usually fired from huge cans or in form of grenades towards the protesters’ crowds. By these means, police can disperse a protest in a few moments with no need to chase each person. However, the consequences of being subjected to tear gas particles are much worse since it is mostly impossible to breathe in a usual way and the tearing may not stop for several hours. That is why tear gas is also used for military purposes.

In any case, we recommend putting on at least nose-covering goggles during a protest since you can meet with tear gas or pepper spray at any moment (usually it is highly unexpected). At least, this gear will help you to see what is going on and be able to take some breath with your nose in case the throat is full of gas.

What to Do if I Have No Gas Mask in an Emergency Situation?

However, sometimes you can not even expect to meet tear gas or pepper spray during a day, so there is no mask or respirator with you. Luckily, you can create the best protection from improvised means.

For example, it is considered that a wet handkerchief soaked in lemon juice can protect you from tear gas or fume intoxication and even death. Also, remember about the significance of timely escape, no protest is worth your life.

How to Eliminate the Outcomes of Tear Gas?

Again, it is better to minimize the effects of tear gas by putting on a mask or respirator, since any physical consequences of being subjected to it are highly unpleasant and hard to get off with. However, here are some tips on how to remove the results of being sprinkled with tear gas or pepper spray:

  • do not touch your face until you clean your hands with clean water, especially avoid mixing tears or water with particles on your face (it will boost the process of soaking into the skin)
  • use a handkerchief or wipes to remove mucus from nostrils and skin, you can also blink frequently to be able to see what is around you
  • get a milk can to pour it all over your face to reduce the burning and remove the gas particles, the milk also filters the composition of the gear that hit your face
  • when you get home, remove your clothes and wash them, try not to touch any surfaces with the affected textiles
  • take a cold-water shower and do not forget to also wash your hair

If after an hour after doing these steps you still feel burning in your eyes, nose, throat, or skin, you should visit a doctor for personal recommendations.

The Right Mask For You

The Right Mask For You

All the gas masks can be divided into two categories such as mask respirators and masks covering the entire face (or full-face masks)

Mask respirators or air-purifying respirators cover only your nose and mouth, leaving the rest of your face and head uncovered and unprotected. This type of unit will give you respiratory protection, but it will not protect your eyes from smoke or hazardous materials. On the other hand, this respirator provides a wider field of view for a user. So this kind of equipment has its strong and weak points.

A full-face mask respirator ensures complete protection for the entire face. Usually, the filter is positioned somewhat below the mouth area, the whole face is covered, the eyes stay protected, and you can look around through the glass goggles or plastic shield. However, this safety comes with a minor disadvantage: some models don’t have enough room inside to wear prescription glasses. So consider switching to contact lenses or choose the mask respirator that will suit you best. Anyway, they are a must-have for your home safety.

Full face gas masks sort into two main categories:

Air Purifying Respirator

It represents the most popular and affordable respirator type, with the filter directly inserted into the mask. This setting works just fine as long as you keep the seal tight. If it breaks, for example, and the space between your chin and the mask or a breach in the mask material appears, the air will get through, ignoring the filter, thereby resulting in poisoning.

For this reason, it is strongly recommended that a wearer doesn’t have a beard because an abundance of facial hair may weaken the seal.

But if you are a dedicated beard wearer and a survival geek, you might want to check out the video below on how to handle this type of gas mask without shaving your beard off.

Another important tip is to be careful while wearing a gas mask. An awkward move can break the air seal or even make a gas mask fall off.

SCBA Masks

SCBA stands for the “self-contained breathing apparatus.” It meets professional use among firefighters and features a separate mask-filter construction. SCBA mask supplies air from a detached tank you carry around with you.

These settings provide the best protection for the seal, making SCBA the safest full-face mask respirator on the market. However, this setup is too heavy and big for an average civilian. Because of its size, it’s difficult to store in small spaces. And more, belonging to professional-class protection products, SCBA masks are usually high in price.

The most reasonable choice would be to go for a full face filter respirator with a P100 rating. Note that you should practice regularly to be able to put the gas mask on correctly and in no time.

Frequently Asked Questions – FAQ

How Effective is a Gas Mask?

Mask respirators differ in the construction and protection level they provide. For instance, paper-filter masks will protect you from airborne particles but are completely ineffective when it comes down to NBC hazards. Filter respirators can provide protection against gasses, hazardous vapors, and other harmful substances. And more, full-face respirators also will protect the wearer’s eyes. However, specialists insist that a face respirator will be useless in a widespread nuclear, biological, or chemical attack. But many customers will still buy CBRN gas masks because of the safe feeling they get from having them in their bags, which is understandable.

Are Gas Masks Illegal?

Buying or selling gas masks is not prohibited. But wearing them in public may be the cause of certain problems. For instance, each state in the USA has its code relating to filter masks. And the standard approach to the issue is that wearing a gas mask in public may be interpreted as an attempt to conceal the identity. Any person doing this is at risk of being deemed guilty of a misdemeanor. However, gas mask regulations vary throughout the United States and are subject to individual study. For more information on mask-wearing in the US, go to www.ready.gov website.

But there can be times when wearing a mask respirator is an obligation. For instance, during war or widespread technological disasters where public safety is a top priority. The 2020’s Coronavirus pandemic showed the importance of mask-wearing.

In the 1940s, London wearing a mask was a part of everyday life as it was in much of Europe in the wake of WWI and the horrors of its chemical attacks.

How Much Does a Gas Mask Cost?

Price is always a choice between best and affordable. And air-purifying respirators are no exception. There are cheaper products as well as ones that are refreshingly high in price. The price of an NBC respirator mask depends not only on the overall quality or brand status but also on design, temperature range, additional features, etc. Considering the given information, one can conclude that an average customer should be ready to spend from $100 up to $400 on a personal NBC gas mask. Also, be ready to spend some extra cash for CBRN mask filters because filters may go separately.

How to Make a Gas Mask?

It is possible to manufacture a face respirator safety system using home materials like a regular medical mask, a two-liter plastic bottle, a razor blade, and duct tape. There is even a way to make a filtration system respirator mask using an extra plastic bottle, a short rubber hose, pillow stuffing, and charcoal. However, a homemade respirator mask takes too much time to make and hardly meets the NBC protection standards.

When Was the Gas Mask Invented?

The first examples of what we now call a gas mask can be found in Ancient Greece. In those days, Greeks used sponges to protect the lungs. More sophisticated varieties of face respirator masks appeared centuries later in Europe and North America. The first entirely practical, almost modern-day type mask was manufactured in 1916. The respirator mask was designed by British chemist Edward Harrison to protect soldiers during chemical attacks. Harrison’s mask, in many ways, became the prototype for modern CBRN safety systems.

Can I Breathe Freely Wearing the Gas Mask?

Undoubtedly, breathing with the help of the gas mask is not the same as breathing in the usual manner without it. Breathing through the mask respirator is more difficult as a fact. Besides, if one has any respiratory diseases, breathing through a gas mask can be even harder. Claustrophobia represents a piece of contradictory evidence to wearing a gas mask as well. Wearing a mask, people suffering from this unpleasant phobic reaction start suffocating at once.

Can Any Type of Gas Mask Fit Children?

For children under 15 years old, some special models of masks are designed because the standard gas masks for adults do not fit them because of their sizes (it is especially related to small children). Moreover, it is not that easy for a child to put on a mask, even if it has an appropriate size. Before using it in an emergency situation, you have to carry out training on how to put it on, wear it and how to behave when wearing a gas mask.

Can the Gas Mask Filter Be Stored Forever?

As with everything in this world, masks and their consumables (filters, for instance) tend to deteriorate and become obsolete. The storage period of a standard cartridge is not short and sometimes can last up to 20 years or even more. And yet, you should carefully store the mask and its details and consumables. To increase the lifespan of your gas mask and its cartridges and filters, store them in a proper manner (the place where these devices are stored must be clean and dry away from heat or cold). Strictly observe their operation manual.

How Long Can I Wear a Gas Mask?

As a rule, you can wear a mask for up to 8 hours. After that, it is required to be put off. And yet, there exist filters against some specific chemicals that can be worn for up to 20 hours. Anyway, it is not acceptable to wear your gas mask for more than 24 hours without any break.

Can the Gas Mask Protect Me if There is a Lack of Oxygen in the Air?

All the types of gas masks are designed to prevent you from poisoned air. They are intended to purify the air spoiled by hazardous chemicals you inhale. Unfortunately, there is no type of gas mask that can provide you with oxygen. In the case of fire when the oxygen level is extremely low the gas mask is useless.
