What do You Need to Survive Apocalypse?

 November 10, 2020

By  Mike Millerson

What do you need to survive Apocalypse? FIrst off, hope. Second of all, knowledge. A zombie apocalypse is less likely to happen than, say, a tornadoe or a pandemic: in any scenario of a doomsday, you should remember about sources of energy, fuel, meat and other nutrients, seeds to revive plants and trees as the hustle subsides, more food and water. There are a lot more various things that you should take care to prepare long beforehand to survive in the post-apocalyptic world.

When you think about what it takes to survive in an emergency, your thoughts literally run away. You start reading survival articles, and the situation becomes even more confusing because there is a huge amount of survival gear or skills that need to be learned. To not go crazy or give up this activity at the very beginning, stop and think about what you really need to survive? We are not talking about comfort and luxury, but the most basic human needs as you need to start with something.

Oxygen, food, water, self-defense, and warm shelter are the things you need first. Yes, then there is the question of comfort, entertainment, but first of all, you need to think about these 5 needs.

Whether it is a zombie apocalypse, nuclear war, pandemic, or any other end of the world, if you can meet your basic needs, then your situation is not so bad, and your chances of survival are significantly increased.

With an abundance of information on survival, it is easy to get lost, but we are here to start with your survival kit basics.

Complete Prepper Checklist

1. Oxygen

Everything is simple here — upon the onset of the TEOTWAWKI scenario, there will either be oxygen, and we will be able to breathe, or not, and then people can hardly do something about it.

But you still need to prepare for nuclear war or radioactive fallout and dangerous diseases transmitted by airborne droplets.

For this case, a few rules and items could help you:

  • Stay at home or in a shelter;
  • Avoid interaction with other people, keep your distance;
  • Wear masks, respirators;
  • Buy a gas mask with filters;

Simple steps will help you survive and satisfy the first basic human need.

2. Nutrients

A human will live for some time without food or on a calorie deficit, but not for very long. Besides, in case of the apocalypse or any other emergencies, you will need strength and energy, so living on a calorie deficit is not recommended. The last thing you want to be exhausted when you need to leave a dangerous place or run somewhere.

You have two options:

  • To make the food supply with a long shelf life;
  • Learn to grow your own food.

We recommend you do not choose one, but combine both of these options.

No matter how well-stocked you are, your food supply will run out in a long-term disaster situation. But the ability to grow vegetables or livestock will turn out to be one of the most useful survival skills. In a post-apocalyptic world, the one who manages to feed himself will survive.

So it is not the last idea for a prepper to stock up well on food with long shelf life, but to buy a few packs of seeds and learn how to grow them.

An important point, prepare your meal plan in case of an apocalypse in advance! Buy food in advance, learn how to grow seeds. In an apocalypse event, it will be too late to go shopping or trying to buy something on the Amazon site.

3. Water

Water supplies are critical to surviving the apocalypse. A person dies pretty quickly from dehydration, so it takes about half a gallon of water a day to function properly.

As with food, you can think of two plans for getting freshwater:

  • Stock up on water for future use, buy loads of bottled water;
  • Live near a constant natural source of water and purify it with water filters.

Again, as with the food situation, to use both plans is the best plan, but you can start with one. Based on your location, the group’s number decides which drinking water supply option suits you best.

Another option is to collect rainwater and purify it with filters and water purification tablets. But relying only on this technology can be a stupid choice since we do not know if it will rain or the weather will send us drought with no hope of getting water.

When it comes to survival, hoping for luck may not be a good choice. Therefore, be sure to stock up on fresh water and think about where else it will be most convenient for you to get drinking water in case tap water will disappear.

4. Self-Defence Knowledge

Even if you are the most peaceful person in the world and the people around you are the same, it is not the fact that it will be the same when the end of the world happens.

And we are not talking about war or zombie apocalypse, or rather, not only about them. You may not need to kill zombies, but you may likely need to protect your life, your hideout, or the lives of your loved ones.

Now we live in a more or less developed culture, but some human’s mind can shake when disaster strikes, and anarchy can begin. So it is not yet known who is more dangerous — zombies or people.

Therefore, as with everything related to survival, you need a plan to protect yourself and your property.

There are many options here, from an ax to a professional firearm. And in our opinion, there cannot be too many tools for protection. Everything may come in handy. Therefore, buy the stuff you want (we vote for a gun or a rifle), do not forget about a decent supply of ammunition, and put it all in the ammo box or safe. So that all ammo supplies are under reliable protection.

And of course, make sure you know how to use them. Local defense and weapon training are worth adding to the list of the most important survival skills.

5. Apocalypse Shelter

Another important part if you want to survive the apocalypse has a shelter.

You need a spare cover that will hide you from rain, wind, snow, or other misfortunes. It can be a bunker or a house, tent, or even a cave lost in the wilderness. There are many shelter options that you can use in an emergency.

Also, do not forget that you will need to warm up your shelter. The last thing you want is to have shelter but die in it from the cold—stock up on firewood, fire starter, or other fuel. If you live in an area with a low population density but with many trees, you can use them to warm up. Otherwise, it is best to have a backup plan in mind.

As you already understood, everything about survival should have a plan. With shelter, the same thing, you might be lucky and will find someone’s abandoned shelter or house in the wilderness, but it is better to think about emergency preparedness in advance and have at least a tent and a bug out bag with the items that may come in handy.

A Final Word

To not get bogged down in the variety of information and tips for surviving the apocalypse, you need to start by thinking about how you will meet basic needs. If you want an action plan from us, then its content might look like this:

1. Buy a good and high-quality gas mask. You can look at options on Amazon.

2. Make a water supply, or rather figure out where you will receive it and replenish your supplies.

3. Stock up on food with a long shelf life. Think about how you can replenish food supplies.

4. Buy a weapon, and learn how to use it. Make sure you have enough ammo.

5. Find/build /buy a safe shelter, a bug out location, make sure you know how to warm it up.

After taking care of the basic things, you can start preparing the first aid kit, purchasing other survival stuff that you are going to need (like batteries, survival radio, off-grid energy sources). But at the very beginning of the way, you must take care of exactly these 5 things, then your chances of surviving the apocalypse will be higher than 99% of people in the world.

FAQs

What should I stockpile for the apocalypse?

You can never be 100% ready for an apocalypse, but you can try. In every event, you need to be prepared to meet your basic needs. There are not so many of them — oxygen, water, food, and security, that is, shelter and the ability to protect oneself.

In oxygen, respirators and gas masks are useful, with water — bottled water and water purification tools. In addition to stocking food, consider growing food from seeds. Make sure you have reliable shelter and weapon to protect your life and the lives of your loved ones.

How do you prepare for the basic apocalypse?

To begin with, all you need to think about is meeting basic needs. Nobody knows what exactly you are going to need, but a person always needs to breathe, drink, eat, have a safe shelter and way to protect his or her life. In the event of a basic apocalypse, you would better have gas masks, water and food supplies, hidden hideout, and items with which you can protect your life, for example, a gun or even an ax. After purchasing these things, you can think about expanding your stocks and prepare a first aid kit, survival gadgets, and other useful items.

How long would run water last in an apocalypse?

No one knows what exactly can happen during the apocalypse, but you always need to prepare for the worst possible way. That is why consider that tap water will disappear immediately. Make sure you stock up on water supplies and think of an alternative way to get it. After all, no matter how good a prepper you are, the water bottle is not bottomless, and you have to replenish stocks.
